Why is nickname an attribute of the from? Surely nickname should be a fully fledged tag (then of course encodings will work :-). <from> foo@bar.co.jp <nickname encoding="JIS">B$$at$</nickname> </from> (I just made up that string so it probably isn't JIS at all.)
